Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neuron disease, is a neuromuscular disease that progressively paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles of the body that we are typically able to move at will. More than 3,000 Canadians are living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis today, many of whom die within two to five years of diagnosis. They gradually face a devastating swift decline in the ability to talk, walk, eat, swallow, and eventually breathe. There is currently no cure for the disease that carries a lifetime risk of 1 in 300 for each of us. With your support, we can change this reality. With your support, there is HOPE for ALS!

Ribbons with white and navy/blue pinstripes (in honor of Lou Gehrig) are used for the representation of ALS. In Canada, June has been declared as ALS Awareness Month by the Canadian Minister of Health and wearing purple is the official color of ALS Awareness Month. Wear purple clothing, accessories, and decorations to show your support for those living with ALS.
